What are Dental Bridges?
Patients of all ages can lose teeth for a variety reasons, such as oral trauma, gum disease, and tooth extraction. If such an event occurs, it’s important to speak with a dentist about the options available to restore your smile. The teeth by the gap may start to shift out of place, resulting in bite alterations, fractures, and pain.
But what exactly is a dental bridge?
An artificial tooth or pontic fills in the space in your smile and is bordered by two abutments. These abutments are typically dental crowns that fasten onto nearby teeth to support the pontic.
There are four kinds of bridges that your dentist in Manitoba can recommend depending on your situation:
- Traditional: This is the most standard type of bridge and can be placed anywhere in the mouth.
- Cantilever: Cantilever bridges are like traditional bridges; however, only one abutment is used to stabilizethe pontic. As a result, it’s often placed at the back of the mouth.
- Maryland: Also known as resin-bonded bridges, this bridge incorporates metal wings to support the pontic. Maryland bridges are often used to fill in gaps where front teeth used to be.
- Implant-supported: Titanium implants are installed into the jaw, and the dental bridge is placed on top.
Regardless of the form of bridge you receive, it’s important to follow your dentist’s instructions and prioritize your oral hygiene so it remains in good condition.
Dental bridges are typically fabricated from porcelain, so they blend in well with your natural teeth. Porcelain is also durable and can withstand daily wear and tear.
Getting Dental Bridges at Our Clinic
First, you’ll need to come in and see one of our dentists so they can talk to you about your dental needs and examine your smile. X-rays may also be taken if needed. Once it’s been decided that a bridge is the best choice for your case, we’ll take impressions. These molds are sent to our partner dental lab, 3D-Digital Dental Design, where your bridge will be created. You’ll be given a temporary prosthetic while you wait.
When it’s time to place the permanent bridge, dental cement is kept in place with cement. Our team will make any adjustments to the structure and ensure it fits properly before polishing it and letting you go.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about anything.
